Lipikorn Makaew is a renowned artist from Chiang Mai, Thailand, and currently a professor at the Faculty of Arts, Lanna Rajamangala University of Technology. He also has his own studio in San Kamphaeng, Chiang Mai. Having dedicated himself to artistic creation for many years, he possesses a profound understanding of Buddhist art. His works blend Lanna cultural symbols, Eastern Zen philosophy, and contemporary artistic language, garnering widespread attention in Thailand and Southeast Asia.
In Lipikorn’s art museum, the atmosphere of art and the essence of Lanna culture coexist harmoniously. His works, with their delicate lines and Zen-like compositions, skillfully blend traditional Thai Buddhist art symbols with contemporary creative language, presenting a serene yet powerful visual impact.
His large-scale triptychs are particularly stunning: the outlines of the Bodhi leaves, the intricate lines, and the myriad details interwoven in the self-portraits seem to tell a story of the cycle of life and the rhythm of nature. Every stroke of the line is full of power, and every color contains the philosophy of Eastern aesthetics, allowing us to feel a sense of tranquility and resonance as we gaze upon them.
As the cover artist for the 2025 commemorative photo album celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Thailand, Lipikorn’s pure love for art and his fervent anticipation for cultural exchange between China and Thailand were evident in our conversation. He expressed his great honor in participating in this China-Thailand Friendship Contemporary Art Exhibition, hoping to use his work to allow more Chinese audiences to understand the charm of Thai art, and also looking forward to sparking more creative inspiration with Chinese artists.
His works often take nature, life and faith as their themes, with delicate and intricate lines and a narrative composition. They retain the essence of traditional Thai art while giving it the expressive power of contemporary art.
